A coffee ratio like 1:16 means one part coffee to sixteen parts water by weight (water is about 1 g per ml). So 500 g of water at 1:16 needs about 31 g of coffee. Lower ratios (more coffee) make a stronger brew; higher ratios make a lighter cup.
Typical starting points: pour-over and drip 1:16, French press 1:15, AeroPress 1:13, moka pot 1:10, cold brew concentrate 1:8, espresso about 1:2. Weighing your coffee gives the most consistent results โ tablespoons vary with grind and bean.
